The Long Road To Woodstock: R & R In Odgen [It's Gonna Be Like A Novel, Or At The Very Least A Novella, So If You're Not Up For It, Move Along] Today, at the King Street Metro station here in Alexandria, there was a tall bearded white guy with two-foot dreads, wearing a Star Trek t-shirt (it looked new). He had that hippie smell about him, muted but there---not dirty hippie, but that patchouli (I guess) smell. I'd been thinking about patchouli. It's possible, though not certain, that the girl on the lawn at the side of the library in Ogden had that patchouli smell. What I'm certain of is that she had a tattoo. With that tattoo came a sexual promise, guaranteed delivery. Of course, she probably had a boyfriend hanging around too. And of course I've forgotten him. I just remember lying on the grass by the library, talking, or not talking, about things long forgotten. I think maybe we went in to the library too, the way kids everywhere go into libraries and hang-out. That's the sum total of my memories of the hippie girl, and Ogden, Utah, and the state of Utah. No Mormons tried to proselytize me, by the way, at least not that I remember. I always wanted to write a story about two of those Mormon boys knocking on the door of a sexy girl and her seducing both of them, like in Somerset Maugham's "Rain"---I wonder if that's ever happened? I was in Ogden for two or three days, laying up, I guess you'd call it. I don't remember anything about it, other than the hippie girl. I got a room at a downtown walk-up hotel---the room cost three dollars a night, maybe four (it wasn't, by the way, the cheapest room I paid for on that trip). It probably was a room with a bed and a beat-up dresser, and a bathroom down the hall, but I've forgotten that too. After two or three days in Ogden, where the tattooed hippie girl provided the only memory, I was ready to move on, hitchhiking again. geek chic, I hope Finishing off a cup of coffee before a movie date with my mother and some friends. I'm wearing: A split skirt newly adopted from Goodwill, bearing all the hallmarks of having been made by an eager but not yet entirely accomplished hobbyist. It closes with *velcro,* y'all, which I'm sure was still a cute novelty back when she made this in like 1978. Easily my new favorite item of clothing. A 27-year-old custom t-shirt from my husband's high school Star Trek fan club. My kelly green Chuck Taylor's, which I wish I could claim were about twenty years old but which I only bought a month ago for weightlifting. A cheap denim jacket from TJMaxx. A bag from B. Makowsky, because when 90% of your wardrobe comes from Goodwill you can afford to splurge on a nice purse if you really, really hate shopping for purses and it's taken you three months to find one you actually like.
